I Hate Like Paying Bills!
Do I complain about paying bills?
Nobeing able to pay them makes it enjoyable! When I sit down to pay my bills, it reminds me of the Big Bill I once had. Why, there's no comparison between this bill and That One. In order for me to make this payment I had to work a certain amount of time. But with the Big Bill, even if I had worked my entire life it would not have been enough! But now it is paid in full. Someone else paid it for me. What a relief!
What was my big bill?
It was the same as yours. It's the same one owed by every person on earth. We owe it because of our sin. It is fearful, because there is no way to pay it except by spending an eternity in hell. God, in the Bible, has said,
"There is none righteous, not even one…for all have sinned…" Romans 3:10, 23
Furthermore, we read,
"The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord." Romans 6:23
Just in case you didn't know, your Big Bill could be paid for too! It was Jesus Christ, God's Son, who paid the wages for my sin and yours when he died on the cross about two thousand years ago. I was thrilled when I learned that I could exchange my huge debt for a free gift: eternal life! God has offered this gift to each one of us individually.
If someone were to hold out a gift to you but you never reached out to take it, it would be of no use to you. It's the same with the gift of eternal life. You might be wondering, "Okay, this sounds like quite an offer that God is making, but how can I reach out and receive a gift I cannot see?" Someone in the Bible asked the very same thing. He said, "What must I do to be saved?" The simple answer he was given was:
"Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved." Acts 16:30,31
It's that simple!
Admit that you are a sinner.
Believe that Jesus died in your place so that you could be forgiven of all your sin.
The day is going to come when each person will stand before God. The Bible says,
"Each one of us shall give account of himself to God." Romans 14:12
Will you stand there with your debt or will God be able to pronounce, "Paid in full"? There is only one SaviorJesus Christ. He voluntarily hung on the cross and shed His innocent blood for your sins and mine. After he died, his body was laid in a tomb, but that was not the end of Him. Three days later he rose from the dead and was seen by over 500 witnessesall of this to prove that He was no ordinary person. He was, in fact, the very Son of God who had accomplished his task fullynot a penny of debt was left for you and me to pay.
Why should you forfeit heaven for a bill that He is willing to pay?
Perhaps you think, "Well, I wouldn't know what to say." You can put it in your own words but basically you could pray something like this:
Dear Lord Jesus, I do believe you are the Son of God. I acknowledge that I am a sinner. I believe that you died in my place and that you rose again from the dead. Thank you for paying my sin-debt so I could be forgiven. Please reveal yourself to me in a deeper way. Help me to come to know you better. Amen.
